Our Social and Environmental Activities

Haynard is above all, like me as its founder, pragmatic and about getting sustainability done. Day to day I try to walk the talk I give my clients, working from home to support them most of the time. This year (2023) we have gone beyond a renewable power tariff- we installed solar panels and a battery, to use the greenest power overnight and generate our own; and we've finally been able to swap to an electric vehicle. I'm always reviewing my suppliers of services, swapped to a green accountant this year and next up is greening the banking!

I work a lot with SMEs new to sustainability and particularly carbon footprinting, holding their hand and supporting them as they learn the first steps, I help them create baselines and set targets. Many smaller companies are now being asked by clients to do this ahead of regulations, as Scope 3 targets (supply chain) are being applied to them. I also help them identify suitable actions in key areas and generally explain terms of finding solutions. I will also assist clients (and in the case of unengaged clients, influence for the better) by translating sustainability into relevant concepts for them and by showing the win-win for their business.

I also work with transport-related companies, from rail operators and car leasers to tech startups leveraging the data and SI revolution to automate calculations and drive green change. The ethos I developed as I changed career 15 years ago is "resilient sustainability" and this steers the choices I make about who to work for, and with, and what suppliers or subcontractors to use.

Resilient Sustainability is based on Transition thinking: Sustainability is of no use without resilience to ensure it can endure and adapt to change - think of companies who had great sustainable plans but got caught out by change, and even accused of greenwashing later. Resilience is temporary or undesirable without sustainability, because you are not managing environmental, social and even economic risks without integrating sustainability into your strategies; and you may continue to do unsustainable things, exposing yourself to increasing risks. Here, think of companies currently subject to a paradigm shift and possible asset-stranding, such as fossil fuel extractors. You need both qualities together to flourish in today's quickly moving and uncertain business environment.

Currently I am reviewing my own carbon footprint and reduction plans, and developing a light-touch service for freelancers like myself who may need to report one in order to bid on certain contracts especially the public sector.

Other activities- I am an avid upcycler and seek to avoid new purchases and plastic wherever possible. My phone is modular and repairable, my monitor refurbished and my office furniture second-hand and refurbed wherever possible. I am a STEM ambassador and speak to schoolchildren about both my original sector of engineering and my current career in sustainability consultancy. I mentor and coach both young people and new associates/colleagues every year through various networks I belong to such as Women in Sustainability, the IMechE, and Transition Engineering. I am always looking for ways to collaborate to create more green and social impact and am an active communicator on social media (primarily LinkedIn about green issues for businesses and individuals, and especially solutions and good news).

I do occasional pro bono support work for sustainability related events causes and organisations. I plan to carry all of this ethos and activity forward as the business grows year to year.
